10 NFL Players with the Funniest Names

February 24, 2025 by nflinlondon

The off-season is upon us, which means it’s time to fill the void with anything NFL to remind us what a great game it is. To that, we thought we would look at some of the NFL players with the Funniest names. From past legends to current stars, the NFL has seen its fair share of memorable monikers that have left fans chuckling in the stands and at home. Let’s dive into our list of the 10 NFL players whose names have become almost as famous as their on-field achievements, and let’s face it, just funny to say.

1. Dick Butkus – The Name That Started It All

Perhaps the most legendary funny name in NFL history belongs to one of its greatest linebackers. Dick Butkus, who played for the Chicago Bears from 1965 to 1973, became a Hall of Famer despite (or perhaps partially because of) his unfortunately comedic name. The combination of his first and last name has provided decades of entertainment for football fans, even as they acknowledge his status as one of the most fearsome defenders ever to play the game.

 2. Ha Ha Clinton-Dix – No Joke About His Talent

Born Ha’Sean, but nicknamed “Ha Ha” by his grandmother in childhood, Clinton-Dix has embraced his unique moniker throughout his NFL career. The former Green Bay Packers safety’s name has been the source of countless broadcast chuckles and social media memes, but his play on the field – including a Pro Bowl selection in 2016 – has proven he’s no laughing matter.

 3. Barkevious Mingo – Straight Out of a Sci-Fi Movie

With a first name that sounds like it could belong to an alien overlord, Barkevious Mingo has been turning heads since entering the league in 2013. The linebacker’s name has inspired numerous fan discussions about whether it’s the most unique name in NFL history, and it’s certainly in the running for that title.

 4. D’Brickashaw Ferguson – Offensive Line Royalty

The former New York Jets left tackle’s parents created his distinctive first name after a character in “The Thorn Birds” named Father Ralph de Bricassart. The result was a name that sounds both regal and slightly ridiculous, perfect for a man who would protect quarterbacks for 10 solid NFL seasons.

 5. Equanimeous St. Brown – Poetry in Motion

Currently playing as a wide receiver, Equanimeous Tristan Imhotep J. St. Brown might have the most sophisticated-sounding funny name in NFL history. His father, a former Mr. Universe, gave all his sons unique names, but Equanimeous stands out even among his uniquely-named brothers (one of whom, Amon-Ra, also plays in the NFL).

6. Captain Munnerlyn – Born to Lead

When your parents name you “Captain,” you’re either destined for greatness or endless jokes – in Munnerlyn’s case, it was both. The former NFL cornerback lived up to his commanding first name during his career, though broadcasters never tired of pointing out the apparent rank in his name.

7. Taco Charlton – A Delicious Talent

While his real first name is Vidauntae, “Taco” Charlton has embraced his nickname throughout his NFL career. The defensive end has heard every possible food-related pun during his time in the league, but the name has certainly helped make him memorable among fans.

8. Colt McCoy – Too Perfect to Be Real

Sometimes a name is funny simply because it’s too perfect. Colt McCoy sounds like a character from a 1950s Western movie rather than a real NFL quarterback. The veteran signal-caller’s name has been bringing smiles to fans’ faces since his college days at Texas.

 9. Whitney Mercilus – Ironically Named

The former Houston Texans linebacker’s last name (pronounced “merciless”) seemed almost too perfect for a defensive player. Despite his intimidating surname, Mercilus was known as one of the nicest players off the field, creating an amusing contrast that fans and media often noted.

 10. Ikponmwosa Igbinosun – Tongue-Twister Supreme

While his NFL career was brief, Igbinosun’s name earns a spot on this list for its sheer complexity and the challenge it presented to broadcasters and fans alike. The defensive end’s full name became something of a legend among announcers who had to prepare extensively just to attempt its pronunciation.

While these names might draw chuckles, they’ve also helped these players stand out in a league of thousands. A memorable name can become part of a player’s brand, helping them remain in fans’ memories long after their playing days are over. In some cases, these unique monikers have even helped players build their personal brands and post-NFL careers.

For fans and commentators alike, these distinctive names add an extra layer of entertainment to the game we all love. They remind us that football, for all its seriousness and competition, can also be a source of joy and amusement, even if that wasn’t what their parents intended when filling out those birth certificates.

Whether you’re a casual fan or a dedicated follower of the sport, these names serve as reminders that sometimes the most memorable aspects of football have nothing to do with what happens on the field. They’ve become part of NFL folklore, ensuring that these players will be remembered not just for their athletic achievements, but for the smiles their names have brought to fans’ faces over the years. Which player do you think had/ has the funniest name?

Spring Steps

March 21, 2023 by nflinlondon

Well it certainly feels like the NFL is going to be very interesting with the amount of action we have seen the past few weeks in the league, as we take a look at some of the Spring Steps.

Some of the biggest names are on the move, while some even top tier names still have nothing going on with them. What’s the deal with that?

We’ll take a look at some of the moving and shaking going on in the league thus far, as we check in on some of the teams and see what the heck they are doing?

Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons NEED a QB for 2023, it all depends where they are going to get him from.

With most of the major talent gone, it seems that the best hope for a new passer this season is in the Draft. C’mon, can you really build a squad around Desmon Ridder after the Mariota season last year?

Who and how they end up with should have big impact on some of the players that they have already started to build around.

ATL traded for TE Jonnu Smith from the Patriots, as well as snagging Taylor Heinicke from the Commanders, but it was their splash for cash on former Bengals safety Jessie Bates III that brought the most head scratches.
Sure, the Falcons D sucks, but do you really need to make Bates the 4th highest paid safety in the league?

Carolina Panthers

The Panthers have made no secret that this is going to be a ‘rebuilding year’ after having liquidated their assets over the past few seasons.

Trading off McCaffery last year, then the trade up with the Bears shows that Carolina is looking for a fresh restart to build the team around a new, young stud.

Carolina has made some pretty major acquisitions in this offseason, taking Miles Sanders from the Eagles, picking up Adam Thielen from the Vikings, Hayden Hurst and the solid ginger-ninja in Andy Dalton to back up whatever pretty boy they bring in.

The Panthers defence wasn’t horrible last year, so the additions of players like DeShawn Williams, Shy Tuttle, Justin McCray and Vonn Bell should help them from leaking points in 2023.

Chicago Bears

The Bears shuffled off their number one pick to the Panthers, allowing them to put the focus mainly on giving Justin Fields the tools that he needs to develop into a fully grown Bear.

Chicago blew some of its wad on former Bill Tremaine Edmunds, which is quite odd considering they could have just tossed that cash at All Pro Roquan Smith.

They did make a great move to snag the handsy DJ Moore from the Panthers, RB Travis Homer from the Seahawks, former Packer Robert Tonyan, RB D’onta Foreman and back up QB PJ Walker.
It’s like the Bears kind of cleaned out the closets of Carolina to find the simple things that ‘bring them joy.’

With the NFC North in flux, it could be more than a rebuild year for the Bears.

Denver Broncos

Splashing cash to protect the ass of Russell Wilson has been the driving force for the Broncos, who bolstered their D this week with some pretty key additions.

Former 49er Mike McGlinchey helps Denver out at tackle, although at a hefty 5 years for $87.5 million.
Adding to him is guard Ben Powers ($52 million), as well as another $45.8m for former Cardinal DE Zach Allen.

Offensively the Broncos also grabbed former Bengal Samaje Perine to help their running game, as well as slinger Jason Stidham to help in the back up role when Wilson inevitably ends up injured midseason.

It’s high hopes for the Broncos in 2023, in a division that will offer very little hope.

Lamar

How ya feeling Lamar? Feeling the love yet? Didn’t think so.

This drama is going to go down to the wire, and will probably end up with Jackson signing with the Patriots anyhow, just to make the AFC East a cluster-bang of teams for 2023.

Aaron

Can we just buy the guy a groundhog? Then it can tell us what it’s thinking, and whether or not we need to bother listening to it, or we can just go back to bed?

Free Agents Podcast

February 18, 2021 by nflinlondon

The 2020 NFL season is now done and dusted, leaving us nothing to do but twiddle our thumbs for the next 6 months. Thankfully, we have recorded a podcast about all the NFL Free Agents up for grabs to keep you occupied for an hour or so (if you listen twice).

Wade McElwain and Ryan Cull are still going through NFL withdrawal, both of whom are quite shaky in this episode as they get ‘the good stuff’ out of their veins.
Bears fan Wade worries about a future that might include Carson Wentz, whereas Bills fan Ryan is Jonesing for a hit of JJ Watt to make the Bills extra special.

Among some of the other players they look at in this episode includes:

Dak Prescott

Who wants to swallow a big load of Dak? That’s what the Cowboys are facing if they want to franchise tag Prescott for another season. After taking that horrible injury in the 2020 season, Dallas fans will be wondering if it’s worth it.
Despite the drama, Dak is a heck of a QB-tossing up some amazing yardage in a losing Cowboys effort.
The boys both think he will be back with ‘Dem Boyz this season again.

Allen Robinson II

Oh Bears, what are you going to do? A typical Chicago move would be to piss him off so much he never wants to come back, but there is a chance Robinson will return if the Bears can offer a solid QB option. Trubisky and Foles are not the answer, but Robinson is-so the Bears will need to move the world to get him the ball chucker that he needs.
If Chicago doesn’t franchise him, Miami will grab him.

Will Fuller IV

Another wide receiver, except this one misses at least half the games each season. When he’s good, he’s very good. When he’s injured, he’s often injured-so it will be a leap of faith whoever wants to go Full Fuller.  With plenty of option out there, Fuller might need to resign himself to a WR2 or 3 role.
Texans have shot themselves in all of their feet, so it’s likely that they will move on from him and let him roam the open pastures.
Most likely playing options-Packers; 49ers; Giants.

Shaq Barrett

Shaq attack was what led to a wonderful performance by the Bucs in SuperBowl 55. The problem with winning a SuperBowl is trying to keep all the talent who are being wooed by other teams. Those teams don’t have TB12 though and every player and their brother is willing to take less to play with Brady.
Shaq won’t take less, but you can imagine every Tampa bean counter shifting the sands to make sure Shaq is back for next season. His ass ain’t going nowhere.

Ryan Fitzpatrick

Which team hasn’t had any Fitzmagic at this point? Although Miami has said that they want to hang on to Ryan and his big brain for the 2021 season, it’s likely the little hobo will move on down the road.
Loads of teams could use the services of Fitz, especially if it looks like that they might lose out on the QB Fiesta that is looming for the draft and free agency.
Wade thinks that he will end up starting for the Patriots, and Ryan tends to agree.

There are loads of other players discussed in this podcast, including: Kenny Golladay, Justin Simmons, Hunter Henry, Richard Sherman, Jameis Winston, Antonio Brown and Andy Dalton.
Have a listen and a giggle to the whole podcast to fins out more.

2020 NFL Schedule

May 12, 2020 by nflinlondon

The NFL season is ready to go? It seems so according to the NFL who have bravely pushed through with a regular season schedule released this week full of exciting contests. Corona virus is going to have the final day in how all this is going to play out, but at least they have tried.

International games are scuppered, & there’s doubt that fans will be able to attend the first half of the season. Alcohol also looks to be banned as frequent urination embraces the virus quite easily. Who wants to go to a game with no beer anyway.

Key Games

Week 1-Bucs vs Saints

Brady vs Brees in an epic NFC South showdown. This game will be Corona spotlight as we blow into this new dilemma season. These guys are chasing records, so this will be a blast off to the most interesting NFL adventure in history.

Week 3-Chiefs vs Ravens

It’s a massive AFC battle as the two most magical QBs in the league shoot it out to see who take as an early season loss. One of these teams will not have a perfect season & that’s what makes it a great game.

Week 4-Patriots vs Chiefs

The Chiefs will have just played the Ravens the week before so this will be a slug fest for both teams. Mahomes will look to solidify his dominance over the league with a demonstrative hometown performance.

Week 6-Bucs vs Packers

Brady vs Rodgers (?) if they’re both healthy in this new league, but this will be a new NFL dynamic. Who will really GOAT out in this contest, & how will this affect the NFC? Week 6 is always a breakpoint in a team’s retrospect as they gauge their 5 game record, & look to where they can be by week 10. This game will have huge implications.

We will be looking at safe distancing NFL parties for 2020, but let’s think of ways we can watch this season together.

Listen to our podcast for all the great game predictions.

NFL Wins

May 12, 2020 by nflinlondon

The Chicago Bears are the best team in football if you go by wins. Granted they started as one of the original teams, so they should be.

The Packers are nipping at their heels, hot off some stellar 90s wins by Farve & Rodgers. The way they’ve been playing in the previous decades points to another series of wins with the potential of Love.

And of course the Giants are the 3rd most among winners, when they absolutely devastated throughout the 60s, 70s & 80s. Those who remember that era will attest that the they were like the Pats of that time but for way longer.

Where are them Cowboys? Well, they didn’t play as long as these other teams who have 30 years on their franchise.

The Patriots of course have been our champion of late, cruising for the past 15 years, but are their best years behind them? Will Stid-Meister be their new QB of the future and give them more wins? Time will tell, but probably no.
