NFL Fantasy History

July 16, 2024 by nflinlondon

It’s almost time to kick off your NFL Fantasy Football season for 2024, but it hasn’t always been so easy and straightforward to put a team together. What do you know about NFL Fantasy History? The digital age has spoiled fantasy fans with stats and ease, and is a far cry from the hand-written draft picks made a few decades ago.

Fantasy football has evolved from a niche hobby into a cultural phenomenon that captivates millions of fans each year. So let’s take a look at the history of NFL fantasy leagues, their origins, references in popular culture, and their evolution in the digital age. Who knows, maybe learning about history can help you put your team together?

Early Beginnings

The concept of fantasy football was first realized in 1962 by Wilfred “Bill” Winkenbach, a part-owner of the Oakland Raiders. Winkenbach, along with a few colleagues, created the GOPPPL (Greater Oakland Professional Pigskin Prognosticators League), marking the inception of fantasy football. This early league comprised eight teams where participants drafted NFL players and scored points based on their real-life performance each week. A bit ironic that it was an NFL owner that started this whole thing that would become a stinger in the butt of the NFL for decades.

Growth in the 1980s and 1990s

For several years, fantasy football remained a niche hobby, primarily enjoyed by a small group of enthusiasts. However, the 1980s and 1990s saw a surge in its popularity. The proliferation of personal computers and the advent of the internet made managing leagues and tracking player statistics significantly easier. During this period, fantasy football content started appearing in magazines and newspapers, further promoting the game to a broader audience.

It was in these golden nuggets of magazine culture that real NFL fantasy pros emerged, spending loads of money on ‘NFL Fantasy Packages’ that you could order, and have mailed to your house.

That’s right kids, it wasn’t always digital love.

Fantasy Football in Popular Culture

Fantasy football’s rise in popularity inevitably led to its portrayal in television shows and movies. One of the most notable examples is the television show “The League,” which aired from 2009 to 2015. This comedy series revolved around a group of friends deeply involved in their fantasy football league, highlighting both the humor and the intense passion that the game can inspire.

Who can forget some of the greatest moments as the team all vied for Shiva Bowl domination? If you haven’t seen the series, it might be a good time to refresh before the season starts anew.

Celebrity Involvement

Celebrities and professional athletes have played a significant role in popularizing fantasy football. Notable figures such as actors Paul Rudd and Ashton Kutcher, as well as NFL stars like Peyton Manning and Jerry Rice, have openly shared their enthusiasm for the game. Their involvement has helped bring mainstream attention to fantasy football, making it a familiar pastime in many households.

The Evolution in the Digital Age

The digital revolution transformed fantasy football into a mainstream activity. The late 1990s and early 2000s saw the emergence of online platforms like Yahoo! Fantasy Sports, ESPN Fantasy Football, and CBS Sports. These platforms provided automated scoring systems, live drafts, and detailed player statistics, making it easier for fans to participate and manage their teams. The advent of mobile apps allowed users to manage their teams on the go, further enhancing the game’s accessibility and convenience.

Cut to the 2010’s as Fantasy turned to reality in an explosion of NFL draft providers on a massive digital scale. Providers scrambled to create fun and unique ways to streamline the draft, knowing that the league would soon give the thumbs up to fantasy.

Advanced Analytics and Tools

The rise of big data and advanced analytics has taken fantasy football to new heights. Platforms now offer in-depth player analysis, predictive models, and customizable scoring systems, allowing participants to make more informed decisions. Tools such as mock drafts, draft kits, and waiver wire advice have become essential for serious fantasy football managers.

Social Media and Community Engagement

Social media has played a pivotal role in fostering fantasy football communities. Platforms like Twitter, Reddit, and Facebook host vibrant communities where fans and experts share insights, discuss strategies, and offer advice. This social aspect has enhanced the overall experience, promoting engagement and camaraderie among participants.

The NFL’s Stance on Fantasy Football

For many years, the NFL was opposed to fantasy football, concerned that it might detract from the actual games or promote gambling. The league actually hated the idea of fantasy, and looked at ways to kibosh it. However, as the popularity of fantasy football continued to soar, the league began to recognise its potential benefits. Fantasy football increased fan engagement, viewership, and interest in the NFL, ultimately leading to the league’s acceptance and promotion of the game.

Embracing Fantasy Football

Today, the NFL fully embraces fantasy football. The league offers official fantasy games and integrates fantasy content into its broadcasts and digital platforms. NFL RedZone, for example, is a channel specifically designed to appeal to fantasy football players, providing live coverage of all the action from around the league. This integration has helped fantasy football become an integral part of the NFL experience.

Economic Impact and Industry Growth

The fantasy sports industry has grown into a multi-billion-dollar business. According to the Fantasy Sports & Gaming Association (FSGA), over 60 million people in the United States and Canada participate in fantasy sports, with football being the most popular. This industry includes not only league-hosting platforms but also a wide range of related services, such as draft kits, expert analysis, and daily fantasy sports (DFS) contests.

Sponsorships and Partnerships

Major brands and companies have recognized the potential of the fantasy football market, leading to significant sponsorships and partnerships. Companies like DraftKings and FanDuel have become household names, offering daily and weekly fantasy sports contests with substantial cash prizes. The NFL itself has partnered with these platforms, further cementing fantasy football’s place in the sports entertainment landscape.

From its humble beginnings in a hotel room in Oakland to becoming a cultural phenomenon, NFL fantasy leagues have come a long way. The game’s evolution has been driven by technological advancements, media exposure, and the passion of millions of fans. Despite initial resistance, the NFL has embraced fantasy football, recognizing its ability to enhance fan engagement and deepen the connection to the sport.

Fantasy football’s rich history and continuous evolution underscore its enduring appeal, ensuring it will remain a beloved pastime for years to come.

So beloved in fact, we are looking to start a few new Fantasy Leagues for our NFL fans around the world.

Watch this space, as we will have opportunities to join free and paid leagues in the upcoming weeks.

History of the NY Giants

June 13, 2024 by nflinlondon

As we continue our look at the history of NFL teams, we turn our attention to a franchise that will be turning 100 years old next year, and they do look good for their age. The G-Men will turn 100 in 2025, as we dig deep into the History of the NY Giants

The New York Giants, one of the most storied franchises in the National Football League (NFL), have a rich history filled with triumphs, iconic players, and unforgettable moments. This journey through time will take you from their early days to their remarkable appearances on the international stage, particularly their games in England, which have been a thrill for UK Giants fans.

 The Birth of a Franchise

The New York Giants were founded in 1925 by Tim Mara with an initial investment of just $500. Little did Mara know, his modest investment would grow into a powerhouse of American football. The team quickly made a name for itself, winning its first NFL Championship in 1927, just two years after its inception. The Giants’ early success can be attributed to their rugged defense and a roster filled with talented players who played with grit and determination.

Little did he also know that one his great granddaughters would star in a flop of a ‘Fantastic Four’ remake, that would literally have him rolling over in his grave.

Championships and Legends

The Giants dominated the NFL in the 1930s and 1950s, becoming synonymous with championship success. Under the guidance of legendary coaches like Steve Owen and later Vince Lombardi (as an assistant), the Giants built a legacy of excellence. Key players during these decades included Mel Hein, Frank Gifford, and Sam Huff, whose contributions cemented the Giants’ place in NFL history.

One of the most memorable moments came in the 1958 NFL Championship Game, often dubbed “The Greatest Game Ever Played.” The Giants faced the Baltimore Colts in a thrilling contest that went into sudden-death overtime. Despite losing 23-17, the game’s excitement and the national television broadcast helped popularize the NFL across the United States.

Struggles and Rebirth

The 1960s and 1970s were challenging decades for the Giants. They struggled to find consistent success on the field, and their once-proud franchise experienced numerous losing seasons. However, the arrival of head coach Bill Parcells in 1983 marked the beginning of a new era.

Under Parcells, the Giants won their first Super Bowl in 1986, defeating the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXI. This victory was followed by another championship in 1990, where they triumphed over the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXV, a game remembered for Scott Norwood’s infamous missed field goal attempt. These victories revitalized the Giants’ fan base and restored their status as an NFL powerhouse.

The Eli Manning Era: Two More Super Bowls

The 2000s saw the Giants usher in another period of success, this time led by quarterback Eli Manning. The younger Manning brother delivered some of the most memorable moments in NFL history, guiding the Giants to two Super Bowl victories.

In Super Bowl XLII, the Giants pulled off a stunning upset against the previously undefeated New England Patriots. David Tyree’s “helmet catch” became one of the most iconic plays in NFL history, helping the Giants secure a 17-14 victory. Four years later, the Giants once again defeated the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI, with Manning’s clutch performance earning him a second Super Bowl MVP award.

Giants Across the Pond

The Giants have not only made their mark in the United States but have also played a significant role in the NFL’s international expansion. The team participated in the league’s International Series, playing games in England to promote American football abroad, much to the delight of G-Men fans in Britain.

Their first trip to England came in 2007 when they faced the Miami Dolphins at Wembley Stadium. In a rain-soaked contest, the Giants emerged victorious, winning 13-10. This game was a historic moment as it was the first NFL regular-season game played outside of North America. The Giants returned to London in 2016, where they faced the Los Angeles Rams at Twickenham Stadium. Once again, the Giants showcased their resilience, securing a 17-10 win in front of an enthusiastic international crowd. 2022 was an even better result for the Giants, as they were able to topple Aaron Rodgers and the Pack 27-22 in an October 9th game. Three visits and three wins for the Giants in London, something other teams would love to boast in the UK.

As the New York Giants continue to build on their storied legacy, they remain a team steeped in tradition and excellence. With a dedicated fan base and a commitment to success, the Giants are poised to create new memories and add more chapters to their illustrious history.

Whether you’re a lifelong Giants fan or new to the world of American football, the history of the New York Giants offers a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of one of the NFL’s most iconic franchises. From their humble beginnings to their international triumphs, the Giants have proven time and again that they are a team to be reckoned with on any stage.

With so many international NFL games popping up each year, we should expect to see the Giants in London quite soon.

London Games 2024

May 23, 2024 by nflinlondon

We can all breathe a collective sigh of relief as the NFL has finally released the upcoming schedule, allowing us to know who is playing in the London Games 2024. Once again it looks like the UK is in for another set of great games, Germany-not so much.

The 2024 has given us a whole new set of viewing parameters for the season, with the Chiefs playing on six different days of the week, the Jets feasting on primetime games, and the Panthers sucking on a big old bag of nothing. So much to think about, and the season hasn’t even started yet!

Let’s look at the London games we have lined up for October 2024.

Jets vs Vikings-Oct 6-Tottenham

Aaron Rodgers is coming to London folks-if he’s healthy, as the first game up is an AFC/ NFC contest.
Minnesota has moved up at QB, and with the talent they have at wide receivers , this could be a matchup between two winning teams.

Early October in London is usually sunny and sweet, so we should also benefit from some balmy temperatures, and great events hosted by the NFLUK.

As the first up of the trio, this one will certainly be of media interest, as Aaron Rodgers is a constant celebrity, and full of soundbites that should tickle the UK media.

Jaguars vs Bears-Oct 13-Tottenham

Bears fans all over Europe will be salivating over this one, as they finally get to see a potential franchise quarterback in the making. Chicago already has a home nation status for England, which means that the Bears will go full out to make sure that this game will go down in the history books.

Jacksonville went 2-0 in their 2023 London games, even busting down the Buffalo Bills in a dramatic game. Then their season went downhill, so it will be interesting to see if Trevor Lawrence will be able to rebound in 2024 as they look to play in London twice again.

Patriots vs Jaguars-Oct 20-Wembley

The Jags host a second game at home, as they take on New England in an AFC showdown. Ok, maybe not a showdown, as the Pats have been less than stellar without that TB12 magic.

The Patriots are committed to Drake Make, and with the recent social image of him looking like Tom Brady’s son, there is hope once again in the loins of Boston. They have a tough division though, so they might be walking into London with a few wins.

It might not be the most popular of the games, but with recent news of new international destinations, this could be the last time that London sees a 3 game set for a while.

Internationals

Other NFL global games to watch out for are the week 1 match between the Packers and Eagles in Brazil on September 6th. This will be a tough test for Jordan Love against an Eagles squad looking for some NFC respect, and they have been starting strong the past few seasons.

Germany gets a bit of coin flip from last year’s AFC behemoth, as they get saddled with a lowly game between the Giants and Panthers in Week 10 on November 10th. Again, it’s easy to make quick snides like this, but who knows what could happen this year with two QBs with massive chips on their shoulders.

Other news this week tips Ireland and Australia for other upcoming potential international destinations.
Tough luck for Canada, who probably ruined their chances by hosting atrocious games in the past, and will probably never see one again unless a billionaire is able to buy a team.

History of the Bears

May 9, 2024 by nflinlondon

With the Chicago Bears due to play in London again in 2024, we thought it apt to take a look at the history of this iconic team, famed for their incredible D, and stellar 1985 Super Bowl team.
So how much do you know about the Chicago Bears? Let’s take a look at the History of the Chicago Bears.

Nestled amidst the vibrant cityscape of Chicago, the Chicago Bears stand tall as one of the most iconic franchises in the National Football League (NFL). Renowned for their rich legacy, the Bears have etched their name in the annals of football history, leaving an indelible mark on the sport. Embark on a journey through time as we unravel the captivating tale of the Chicago Bears, tracing their origins, navigating through challenges, and witnessing their remarkable international growth.

Formation and Early Years

The inception of the Chicago Bears dates back to 1919 when legendary player, coach, and owner George Halas, along with Dutch Sternaman, established the Decatur Staleys. Originally based in Decatur, Illinois, the team swiftly transitioned to Chicago the following year, where they were rebranded as the Chicago Bears. Thus, began a saga of triumphs and tribulations that would define the franchise for decades to come.

This act of camaraderie not only exemplified the spirit of sportsmanship but also underscored the Bears’ commitment to upholding the integrity and longevity of professional football. In doing so, the Bears helped foster a sense of unity among teams and laid the foundation for the league’s enduring success.

International Growth

While the Chicago Bears’ roots may lie in the heart of the Windy City, their influence transcends geographical boundaries, extending far beyond American shores. With the advent of globalization and the burgeoning popularity of American football worldwide, the Bears have embraced opportunities for international expansion. Through initiatives such as the NFL International Series and strategic partnerships with global brands, the Bears have cultivated a diverse and expansive fan base spanning continents. From hosting international games to engaging with fans through digital platforms, the Bears have emerged as a global ambassador for the sport, fostering a sense of camaraderie and unity among fans worldwide.

Legacy and Impact

As custodians of a storied legacy, the Chicago Bears hold a special place in the hearts of football enthusiasts around the globe. Beyond their on-field prowess, the Bears have become synonymous with tradition, heritage, and community engagement. From iconic landmarks like Soldier Field to revered traditions such as the “Monsters of the Midway,” the Bears embody the essence of football culture, weaving a tapestry of memories that resonate with fans across generations. Moreover, through their philanthropic endeavors and commitment to social responsibility, the Bears continue to make a positive impact on society, empowering communities and fostering inclusivity.

Tom Brady Roast Review

May 7, 2024 by nflinlondon

With the NFL season still months away, fans are Jonesing for anything football related to satiate the feels, so when Netflix released the Roast of Tom Brady on Sunday, fans were thrilled to get a bit of football to soothe those DTs.

So was it any good? Is it worth watching? Does TB12 cry? Let’s break some of it all down in our Tom Brady Roast Review.

Roasts

Anyone with a love of comedy will remember the notorious Friar’s Club Roasts that emerged out of a vaudeville era. As the Roasts grew in the 70s’, so was the appetite for celebrities to be roasted by famous comedians and other celebs to validate their ego in a slosh filled affair.

When comedian Jeffrey Ross pushed to reinvigorate the format in the early 2000s’, we were treated to some of the most outrageous and bawdy comedic lines in history. The Roasts of David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson had the likes of Greg Goraoldo, Lisa Lampanelli, and some of the harshest take downs in history.

Recently however, celebrities have been coy to attend given that any of their past deeds to could be brought up, and flashed in their face. To put it plainly, celebs today are too much of a pussy to take it.

Brady Steps Up

Is was good of Tom Brady to put himself up for this, even if it was probably his management to add a bit of humanity to him before his Fox gig.

Brady was a good sport about the various digs about his failed marriage, leaving a pregnant ex, and deflating balls. It seems that the only thing that really irked Tommy was when Jeff Ross made a masturbatory joke at the expense of Robert Kraft, which caused Tom to get out of his seat and remonstrate Ross with a quick ‘don’t do that shit again.’

Apparently there were boundaries.

The Niki Glaser Show

They might as well have given the whole roast to comedian Niki Glaser, who was most definitely the funniest person on the dais Sunday night. Anyone who says ‘women aren’t funny’ might want to see the master craft set that Niki blasted at Tom in a relentless fashion.

Cool, collected and with impeccable Swiss timing, Glaser was able to set the bar so high, that even Randy Moss seemed high when he followed her. Her shots at Gronk were so savage, it’s doubtful that he even got them.

Niki is one of the ‘old school’ roasters on the panel, and it was easy to see why she was the best, and so hard to follow.

Jew Bledsoe

Aside from the typical American race-bait jokes, it was interesting to see Drew Bledsoe toss a little antisemitism Julian Edleman’s way. Not only did Drew shade Edelman’s heritage, but also threw in a few ‘Jewy’ jokes about him haggling his own contract, and be able to switch from a nickel to a dime with added value.

Bledsoe extolled the virtues of winery and marriage, neither of which seemed to be in attendance that night as he was cast off to the side by himself.

Kim K

It wouldn’t be LA (or Englewood) without having a Kardashian at the Roast, as Kim represented her clan to a shower of boos from the home crowd.

Despite the assistance of numerous writers, Kardashian, like many non-comics struggled to get the belly laughs, and consistent ribbing.

Tom was able to lob a funny ‘Kanye’ fathering joke at Kim, which deflated any reason for her to be there.

Roasts are a good indicator of the ‘natural funny’ of a person, and Kim certainly doesn’t have it.

Where’s the Booze?

For a 3+ hour affair that is usually flushed with booze, most of the panel seemed to hold an empty glass for most of the evening.

Drew Bledsoe was wireless as he talked about being winless, Brady had 2 empty glasses on the go, and Kevin Hart seemed like he was smashed from the start, and got drunker and surlier as the night went on.

Although Bill Belichick was never shown drinking, he bounced around that microphone like he had a few. And when Brady hit him later with the dig about doing the dirty and getting caught on a Ring, well that was just hilarious.

All in all it was a fun roast, but  along roast. Netflix will be hoping to smash more of these sports events down our throats to atone for those years of ‘wokrness’, but it will be interesting to see if anyone will have the stones to be able to take a good bashing.

Good on Tom Brady for taking it.
